Generosity Laughs

I'm a big fan of Richard Rohr and the Center for Action and Contemplation. His daily meditations have inspired, comforted, challenged, and provoked me over the years.

In today's meditation, Richard Rohr shares Meister Eckhart's characterization of the Holy Trinity:

The Father laughs
and gives birth to the Son.
The Son laughs back at the Father
and gives birth to the Spirit.
The whole Trinity laughs
and gives birth to us.

I love this image of the Trinity as laughter. Perhaps laughter is the simplest way to show generosity. When we laugh, we give up our suspicion, fear, and anger and receive joy.

Perhaps I've been thinking about generosity all wrong. Generosity is not about giving things up. Generosity is about receiving joy.

I chuckle at that thought.

Rest with this Scripture verse for a few moments:

Sarah said, “God has given laughter to me. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” (Genesis 21:6)

Think of, read, or watch something that makes you laugh. Share your laughter with someone.

Let this laughter be your prayer. Amen.
