A Sacred Companion

Lesser Scaups swimming along the Fox River.

One day, as I was watching three Lesser Scaups swim along the Fox River, I realized an essential spiritual truth: no one travels alone.

We are always journeying with someone. Sometimes we may not recognize our companions--sometimes they might seem invisible. But faith tells me that I am never alone, and the practice of spiritual direction helps me know that in a very real, experiential way.

Spiritual direction is a practice in having such an intentional companion for your journey. One person (the director) walks with another person (the directee) on his or her spiritual journey. The focus of a spiritual direction session is on the directee's experiences of God; the director offers a welcome space and compassionate ear for the directee to grow in closer relationship the the Divine. Spiritual direction is a safe and welcome space where you can share the story of your spiritual journey.

Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.
— Thomas Merton
